GLOSSARY
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
We hope this glossary of terms goes a short way into helping you educate yourself and others about the humble hemp plant, dosing, and the language the sector uses.
Our goal
To give you what we have acquired over the years: Confidence In CBD.
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Endocannabinoids | Naturally occurring cannabinoids made by our very own body that attach to receptors called cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2 receptors). These receptors are specifically arranged and extensively distributed throughout our physiology to ensure the functions and systems correct and ensure our cells, functions and systems of our body move towards a stable state called homeostasis. |
Endocannabinoid System - ECS for short | The ECS plays a multi-functional role by seeking equilibrium or homeostasis via the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and organs. It's major roles are immune activity, brain function, energy production, cell division and the maintenance of organs including the skin - our largest organ |
Endocannabinoid deficiency | Coined by Dr Ethan Russo - this is where your endocannabinoid system is functioning at sub optimal levels. It is thought that this can cause the receptors to struggle to maintain regulation of the systems and functions leading to many states of dis-ease within the body rather than a state of stable and relative ease. |
CB1 Receptor | Is a G protein coupled cannabinoid receptor expressed in the peripheral and central nervous system |
CB2 Receptor | Is a G protein coupled cannabinoid receptor expressed in white blood cells, peripheral organs and immune system. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Cannabis Sativa | A cannabis plant strain that can be divided into two categories: Hemp & Marijuana |
Hemp | A cannabis sativa plant with 0.3 percent (%) THC content and a rich CBD content ranging from 10-25%. So strain selection depth, structure and strength of cannabinoids vary dependent on the quality of the strain and grow destinations attributes. |
Marijuana | A cannabis sativa plant that contains more than 0.3% THC content which is typically rich in high ratios of THC and minimal levels of CBD. Marijuana plants have been selectively bred to typically reduce the balancing cannabinoids like CBD in the plant with very high levels of the intoxicating, high producing THC cannabinoid. The THC range is between 10-35%. |
Phytonutrients | Translates as Phyto (plant) nutrients. Phytonutrients are natural trace compounds that are key for keeping all our vital systems working alongside the vitamins and minerals we ingest through foods so they can do their best work. Phytonutrients dynamically affect our biology, with roles as varied as balancing mood, supporting healthy circulation, cognitive function, aiding gut microbiome and supporting fertility to name but a few. The phytonutrient structure and content is typically a reaction made by plants in response to a threat such as to resist fungi, bacteria, or to protect itself from being eaten by insects and animals. Under AI conditions these threats can be mimicked or enhanced to cause the reaction and therefore potency can be designed. It turns out these threats create a stress response that enriches the plant's phytonutrients/phytochemical makeup that ultimately benefits humans in one big virtuous circle. Stress is vital to plants and humans performing at their best this is called peak level stress. |
Cannabinoids | Canna-binoids are a specific class of chemical compounds or plant nutrients that bind directly or indirectly to cannabinoid receptors (CB1, CB2) of the endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids are a class of compounds produced in the resin glands and flower of the cannabis plant. CBD is one cannabinoid amongst well over 100+ cannabinoids found in the plant. Their accumulative and synergistic effect they create is called the entourage effect. This is why whole plant extracts outperform CBD isolate by 6-10 times in terms of potency and dose requirements. |
Cannabidiol (CBD) | The scientific name of CBD. It is a natural compound derived from the cannabis plant. CBD has an extremely large array of complex actions and connects hand in glove by regulating and augmenting our own endo-cannabinoid system. This is done via its very own and vast receptor system. |
Terpenes | Aromatic molecules that give all plants like rosemary, sage, pine, orange, lemon, cannabis their unique smell and aroma. Terpenes have been found to have medicinal properties like anticancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antihyperglycemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiparasitic. NCBI (Franklin et al. 2001). Terpenes have been found to help cannabinoids like CBD to cross the blood brain barrier more readily & get into your endo-cannabinoid system more easily. Another win for whole plants extracts not CBD isolate. |
Flavonoids | Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients (plant chemicals) found in almost all fruits and vegetables. They are responsible for the vivid colours in fruits, vegetables & cannabis strain varieties. Flavonoids are part of the polyphenol class of phytonutrients. Polyphenols have historically been used in Chinese & Ayurvedic medicine. The journal of nutritional science (JNS), Cambridge Press and NCBI explain the the same: Flavonoids are associated with a broad spectrum of health-promoting effects and are an indispensable component in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medicinal and cosmetic applications. This is because of their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties coupled with their capacity to modulate key cellular enzyme functions. |
Antioxidants | Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals; unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures. They are sometimes called “free-radical scavengers.” CBD rich oils like Broad or full spectrum oils have been found to have higher antioxidant content than vitamin C & E and support mitochondria, energy production and DNA protection in numerous ways for cell survival and balance. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Extraction | This is the way in which broad spectrum or full spectrum oils are removed from the plant in their highly concentrated form. There are many different forms of extraction including; C02, ethanol & hydrocarbon. |
Supercritical CO2 extraction method | The term supercritical comes from the craft & technique the operator uses when alternating the temperature & or pressure when the Co2 turns from a gas to a liquid (supercritical state). After this process is complete and the flower is harnessed into an oil it undergoes winterization. This is filtering out the left over waxes leaving you with a safe, clean, transparent rich oil with all the phytonutrients intact. This extraction method is a very gentle slow process which allows the plants integrity to be harnessed to the greatest effect for consumption. For the greatest results it requires not only a great strain with high resin, trichome dense flowers but also a masterful chef. Supercritical Co2 extraction methods do not use any toxic solvents during extraction. This means DNA CBD consumers are left with a cleaner more purified final product without any nasties. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Full Spectrum Oils | This means your oil contains the full-spectrum or complete whole extract of the hemp plant including THC. THC is the compound known for its high. The cannabis plant contains 400+ trace compounds called phytonutrients. These phytonutrients include: 100+ cannabinoids including the big two (in terms of actions) cannabidiol (CBD) & tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as well as a large array of terpenes, flavonoids & antioxidants. These full essential oils often vary in concentration and ratios extracted from the plant. Full spectrum means a very different thing in the USA or Netherlands vs the UK. This means two very different conversations in stores. |
Full Spectrum in the UK | Full Spectrum means a trace amount of THC in the UK, with the legal maximum being 0.2%. It is more than likely these trace amounts are buffered by the high quality & quantity of CBD. It does not produce any high or psychoactive effects. It will support the entourage effect more than the Broad Spectrum oils, if only slightly. The UK Full Spectrum oils are the best example of CBD rich whole plant extracts in their purest form, intact as nature intended. |
Full Spectrum in the USA | Consumers will find formulations of THC:CBD in concentrations and ratios ranging from 1:1, 1:4, 1;10, 1:14 1;20 & 1:25 etc. Some of these ratios produce a noticeable high, e.g. 1:1, whereas some do not, e.g. 1:20, 1:25. CBD with this type of THC curation stacks the therapeutic benefits of THC and CBD for the individual known as the entourage effect to a far greater extent than the UK. In the USA THC and CBD are great bedfellows that aid a person-centred approach to integrative medicine given the condition, tolerance and consumer preference. Individuals and functional medicine doctors use these Full Spectrum oils for physical, mental or spiritual purposes in a ratio that allows them or their patients to live, work, play or recover most comfortably given their requirements. |
Broad Spectrum Oils | Broad Spectrum CBD rich oil are the essential oil from the whole plant extract minus the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. Broad spectrum oils are designed to provide the benefits the 400+ phyto-nutrients including; antioxidants, terpenes, flavonoids & cannabinoids like CBD. This allows the consumer to get a great bounty of entourage effects and prevents them running the risk of failing a random workplace drug test. Due to the often poor international regulatory standards it is wise to select a CBD oil with the highest international standards of excellence and recognition. DNA CBD select on oils that are manufactured and produced under GMP certification. This is the highest global standard and high yielding plants like our 25% strains. |
DNA CBD Broad Spectrum Oils | As educators we wanted to provide the best oils, suppliers and partners globally. Our broad spectrum oils are GMP certified, multiple award winning strains & extracts, born in rich bio-dynamic soils that have been crafted under the most stringent international standards. THC free & offer exceptional quality. Our mint flavour represents R&D at its finest with each oil transitioning through 3 flavour profiles as they absorb under your tongue for optimal effect and taste. |
Faux Broad Spectrum Oils | Some manufacturers offer CBD isolates with added cannabinoids & or advancing it with terpenes. They then call this a broad spectrum oil. These are not broad spectrum oils. Always ask if your oil is CBD isolate, Broad Spectrum or Full Spectrum hemp. Nature should not be replaced. If the product is a true broad spectrum oil it will already have a rich terpene profile and will not need to be advanced with any terpenes. Often brands replace hemp terpenes with cheaper plant terpenes. |
CBD - Isolate | There is no coincidence that CBD isolate (PURE) is on the bottom of the list. An isolate means the product contains just CBD & nothing else. The 400+ complex phyto-nutrients the whole plant is known for are stripped out. This means there are no entourage effects with CBD isolate and no terpenes to help the CBD optimise for crossing the blood brain barrier. CBD isolate requires higher and more precise doses to be effective and it's being shown that very high doses may increase the interaction with other drugs and medications. The Academy of Medical Cannabis in the UK chaired by Prof Mike Barnes suggests isolate ranges between 6-10 times less potent than whole plant extracts. Meta Analysis proves the same which is often why medical studies have a 300-1500 mg range. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Carrier Oils | Cannabinoids like CBD & THC are fat soluble or lipophilic meaning cannabinoids thrive in a healthy fat environment.
Fats are the transport system that delivers the cannabinoids throughout the endo-cannabinoid system. As you know fat is the most efficient fuel source our bodies can utilise.
|
MCT Oil | Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) is a high quality coconut extract. It is odorless and offers a neutral tone on the pallet making it an excellent base to add flavour. Medium chain fats are considered the fastest absorbing fats by the human body which means MCT oils potentially offer the fastest absorption for CBD onset on the market. DNA CBD oils utilise MCT oil as a carrier. |
Hemp Seed Oil | Hemp seed oil is as the name implies and is a healthy fat that is derived from the seeds. In the plant kingdom hemp seeds offer vegans and vegetarians with a complete protein and essential omega three and six fatty acids in a superior ratio perfect for human consumption. Hemp seed oil is a great all round healthy fat with very little saturated fats & should be a staple in any healthy diet. |
Hemp/Olive Oil Mixed | These oils are interesting as it brings in another healthy fat with it's on elements of phytonutrients into the mix. The benefits of olive oil are well documented but they do have 40% more saturated fats than pure hemp seed oil. This variety often adds a rather bitter nuance to the palette. |
Lipophilic | This term implies CBD is fat soluble. Cannabinoids like CBD do exceptionally well in fats (lipophilic). This is the reason why whole plant extracts are carried in healthy fats called "carrier oils''. They are called carrier oils because they literally carry and transport the CBD rich extracts throughout our bodies. |
Hydro-phobic | Cannabinoids are considered hydro-phobic which means they fear or dislike a water environment. This is why CBD oils should not be put on top of coffee or in water when ingesting the oils unless the oil is specifically called water soluble CBD. |
Water Soluble CBD | Cannabinoids like CBD, derived from the plant are sticky, waxy chemical compounds. The environment they do best in is healthy fats not water. However, the human body is 65% water so creating a water soluble CBD product can increase absorption. They do not last anywhere near as long as fat soluble products on the ECS. It has to be said the technology is advancing and many manufacturers are getting mixed results due to its instability. This type of CBD can now be added to water, smoothies, protein shakes and teas. Unlike traditional fat soluble CBD oils. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Sublingual | Sub means under and lingual means tongue so sublingual means placing the CBD under your tongue. There are two glands that sit under your tongue that allow the CBD rich extract to be readily absorbed into the bloodstream. This method is by far one of the most effective ways to get CBD into your bloodstream.. |
Bioavailability | Bio-availability is an industry term and could also be considered or substituted for the term 'onset'. Bioavailability refers to the speed at which the different product categories take to be delivered & absorbed by the body's endo-cannabinoid system for use. This applies to both the ingestibles and topicals. There is often a range given because everybody is different and therefore sensitivities and lifestyle factors differ within a population. |
Onset | How quickly will the cannabinoids take to begin working in collaboration with our own endo-cannabinoid system from ingesting or topical application? |
Dose | How much do I need to take? |
Distribution | Areas of our physiology that will be affected by the consumption of an ingestible or topical application? |
Duration | How long will the effects last? |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Bi-phasic dosing | Where optimal dosing is concerned, cannabinoids like CBD appear to work along a bell shaped curve. As you slowly increase your dose, outcomes may continue to improve until they reach the peak experience. This represents the highest point on the bell shaped curve, that measure of CBD in mg is your given sweet spot or effective dose. Outcomes tend to reduce as you consume past your sweet spot by tipping over the peak of the bell shaped curve down the slope. Whole plant extracts are far more forgiving and broad where CBD isolate are far less forgiving and need a far more dedicated approach to dosing. Key takeaways are as follows: 1. Excess = Waste 2. Everyone arrives at this peak at a different mg of CBD. Remember there is no one size fits all and no RDI. 3. Consumers often get this wrong by taking more and more CBD, not realising that with cannabinoids; more and more is often less and less. 4. It's up to you to investigate this by starting low, going slow and gradually building up the dose until you find the optimal dose you are seeking. 5. Consume consciously. Low to moderate doses often work best. |
Entourage or Ensemble Effect | This describes the various ways each individual compound works synergistically & magnifies the benefits of each other. The sum total of all its parts is extremely hard to quantify but the medical & scientific literature is clear that there is not only a far greater longevity in the human body but a far greater potency when the plant is left intact and not stripped down to only one element like CBD isolate. The impact of whole plant extracts are undoubtedly enriched by harnessing the full potential of the plant characteristics and compounds. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Tincture | A concentrated herbal extract. CBD is often taken in tincture form. Tinctures are still the most prized because they offer the greatest value for money or return on investment above and beyond all other product categories, they are the least unadulterated, safest and allow the consumer to start low, go slow and build up the dose requirements until an effective outcome is found. 30 ml bottles allow for far greater experimentation for discerning consumers and minimise the environmental footprint. |
Topicals | A concentrated herbal extract from cannabis that can be applied onto the skin for localised support. This acts on the top layers of the skin for irritations, red or flaky skin and aids joint and muscle aches. |
Edibles | Fun and effective ways to enjoy CBD. Consumers can choose sublingual dosing by sucking on the mint, gummy or chocolate to target the ECS sooner. However, most swallow the edibles which take 1-2 hrs for digestion and absorption. This can prove to be an easy entry into CBD. They are always fixed doses of CBD. Always ask if it is isolate (pure), broad or full spectrum. The latest gummies are nano technology and whole plant varieties but there is a lot of isolate/pure varieties so its worth asking the sales person so you can make an informed decision. |
Capsules | Are a fixed dose so are best consumed once the individual knows their optimum dose so they can choose capsules that reflects. Like gummies, capsules take 1-2 hrs before onset due to digestion. Some people do not absorb CBD in their gut or liver so there are cases that it does not work. For optimisation capsules should be consumed with food as this has shown to enhance uptake by 3-6 times in recent studies. |
Vapes | A smokable device that provides CBD quickly, often 0-5mins before onset and can be great for immediate response. Used to be primarily CBD Isolate with cutters (PG and VG). Now, we are beginning to see some faux broad spectrum & full spectrum varieties that are more natural with no cutters. A far better and safer option for consumers. The technology and examples are improving everyday. Start low, go slow. |
Drinks | There have been some really interesting novel flavours paired with CBD we can all get excited about. Drinks for the most part use CBD Isolate not whole plant extracts and therefore are more of a convenient way to have a little dose in the day. They can be hit or miss due to the challenges of creating a stable environment for the CBD to thrive and be absorbed. Due to drinks being CBD isolate the potency is 6-10 times less potent than whole plant extracts and should be firmly kept in mind. Basically 10 mg is not like a 10 mg whole plant. Far from it. Don't be fooled. |
TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
---|---|
Third Party Lab Tests | Where manufacturers use a third party independent lab to test the validity of CBD content & to ensure no nasties like; heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides are found in the ingestible so individuals can safely and consciously consume cannabis without worry |
Certificate of Analysis (COA) | A third party certification highlights the screening of how well the cannabis derived product has performed in regards to: cannabinoids including CBD, THC and terpenes.
The cannabis plant is considered a bio-accumulator which means it is highly absorbent and is the reason why it is essential to find credible suppliers that ensure no nasties are present in their soils during cultivation and production. |
The highest-quality CBD and not a drop less
Pioneering transparency for conscious consumption

Endocannabinoids |
---|
Naturally occurring cannabinoids made by our very own body that attach to receptors called cannabinoid receptors. They are sometimes called “free-radical scavengers.” CBD rich oils like Broad or Full Spectrum oils have been found to have higher antioxidant content than vitamin C & E |
Extraction |
---|
This is the way in which broad spectrum or full spectrum oils are removed from the plant in their highly concentrated form. There are many different forms of extraction including; C02, ethanol & hydrocarbon. |
Supercritical CO2 extraction method |
---|
The term supercritical comes from the craft & technique the operator uses when alternating the temperature & or pressure when the Co2 turns from a gas to a liquid (supercritical state). After this process is complete and the flower is harnessed into an oil it undergoes winterization which filters out the left over waxes leaving you with a safe, clean, transparent rich oil with all the phytonutrients intact. This is where your endocannabinoid system is functioning at suboptimal levels. It is thought that this can cause the receptors to struggle to maintain regulation.. |
Broad Spectrum Oils |
---|
Is a G protein coupled cannabinoid receptor expressed in the peripheral and central nervous system |
DNA CBD Broad Spectrum Oils |
---|
Is a G protein coupled cannabinoid receptor expressed in white blood cells, peripheral organs and immune system. |
Faux Broad Spectrum Oils |
---|
Some manufacturers offer CBD isolates with added cannabinoids & or advancing it with terpenes. Often other plant terpenes that are cheaper than cannabis terpenes. These are not broad spectrum oils despite the claims. The plant has a rich and diverse tapestry of cannabinoids & phytonutrients that faux broad spectrum oils can not compete with. They can't be accurately replaced and do not form the synergy the plant was once known for. What grows together goes together. |
CBD - Isolate |
---|
An isolate means the product contains just CBD and nothing else. The 400+ complex phytonutrients the whole plant is known for are stripped out leaving purely CBD.
This means there are no entourage effects with CBD isolate and no terpenes to help the CBD optimise for crossing the blood brain barrier. CBD isolate requires higher and more precise doses to be effective and it's being shown that very high doses may increase the interaction with other drugs. Under UK law we are sceptical isolate formulations will work effectively given the medical and scientific literature to date. The Academy of Medical Cannabis in the UK chaired by Prof Mike Barnes suggests isolate ranges between 6-10 times less potent than whole plant oils. |

Hemp seed oil is a great all round healthy fat with very little saturated fats & should be a staple in any healthy diet. We can not wait to provide a high quality hemp oil for consumption. |
Hemp/Olive Oil Mixed |
---|
These oils are interesting as it brings in another healthy fat with it's on elements of phytonutrients into the mix. The benefits of olive oil are well documented but they do have 40% more saturated fats than pure hemp seed oil. This variety often adds a rather bitter nuance to the palette customers found rather displeasing. |
Lipophilic |
---|
CBD is fat soluble. Cannabinoids like CBD do exceptionally well in fats (lipophilic). The love a fat soaked environment. This is the reason CBD oils are carried in healthy fats and called "carrier oils''. They literally carry and transport the CBD rich extracts throughout our bodies. |
Hydro-phobic |
---|
Cannabinoids are considered hydro-phobic which means they fear or strongly dislike a water environment. This is why CBD oils should not be put on top of coffee or in water when ingesting the oils. Swallowing these oils will provide little to no benefit and have been used by wellness and CBD brands to get you consuming more and adding it to your lifestyle. Its a shame it does not work that way. It would make life easier but we are here for education not sales. Unless the oil is specifically designed as a water soluble CBD oil. |
Water Soluble CBD |
---|
Cannabinoids like CBD, derived from the plant are sticky, waxy chemical compounds. They do best in healthy fats not water. However, the human body is 65% water so creating a water soluble CBD product can increase absorption. They do not last anywhere near as long as fat soluble CBD on the ECS. Sublingual |
---|
Sub means under and lingual means tongue so sublingual means placing the CBD under your tongue. There are two glands (sublingual glands) that sit under your tongue that allow the CBD rich extract to be readily absorbed into the bloodstream. This method is by far one of the most effective ways to get CBD into your bloodstream. This is why we opt for 0.25 ml dose so you can feel the CBD be fully absorbed with no excess left over. |
Bioavailability |

Vapes |
---|
A device you inhale that provides CBD quickly, often 0-5 minutes before onset. It can be great for an immediate response. It used to be primarily CBD Isolate with cutters that could be harmful with CBD and we suggest avoiding. Nowadays we are beginning to see some faux broad spectrum & full spectrum varieties that are natural with no cutters. A vast improvement. We do not know the long term effects of the oil being inhaled. The technology and examples are improving everyday. Start low, go slow. |
Drinks |
---|
